Ovett Smashes Mile Record Amid IAAF Doubts
Steve Ovett of Britain clocked 3 48.40 to break the mile mark at Rhine River Stadium but doubts linger about its validity as the IAAF had not officially listed the mile in the program. Competitors questioned the last minute switch from 1500 meters and the promoter’s compromise left mile timing as an extra event.

Templeton Faces Suspension After Stadium Altercation
St Louis manager Whitey Herzog fined and suspended Garry Templeton for obscene gestures at spectators during a 9 4 win over the San Francisco Giants. Umpire Bruce Froemming called the conduct immoral and unbecoming a ballplayer, with Herzog scolding Templeton and a brief physical clash prompting the delay. Templeton, 25, has a history of conflicts with management, though Herzog calls him a great talent and hopes for a comeback after an apology.
