Ottawa Student Faces Wage Freeze Abroad During Cruise
Bruce Reynolds son of Mr and Mrs John Reynolds of 326 S Maple Ottawa was traveling with a 26 member American Institute of Foreign Studies team when the Nixon wage price freeze hit. In Athens he found dollars worth a fraction of their value and bank lines up to two hours long. Reynolds, an Emporia State junior majoring in European History, noted travelers checks were devalued and Greek money was hard to use as they awaited funds. He plans to return to Europe next year to continue studying United States history in the heart of Europe.

Salary Increases Split Among Half Of Teachers
Washington AP reports the Nixon wage price freeze will create two pay classes for 2.1 million teachers this fall. Some will see scheduled increases while hundreds of thousands may not, depending on school contract types and timing of their contracts. The National Education Association puts eligibility near 80 percent, though officials privately question that figure. The Cost of Living Council issued guidance clarifying master contracts versus individual contracts and the criteria for eligibility based on work performed or earnings accrued before August 15.

Drug Abuse Group Forms In Ottawa To Study Issue
A task force of about 30 community and school leaders is forming to study drug abuse in Ottawa. An organizational meeting is set for 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Anchor Savings building. About 25 people attended a briefing at the Unified School District 290 office. The group is led by four attendees of a Lawrence conference: Rev. Warren Skiles, Mrs. Douglas Pope, Dr. William E. White, and Kris Garrett, with Bill Boucek as chairman. Many attendees are junior and senior high teachers. A junior high teacher cited local students using drugs and urged immediate action. Boucek noted a city drug problem and mentioned two New York travelers who bought drugs here within 15 minutes of arriving.
