A Ford County jury convicted Gabriel De La Torre of first degree murder in the death of his girlfriend’s 11 month old daughter Joselyn Hernandez after a retrial. Authorities say the child had more than 40 bruises when brought to a hospital on September 6, 2009. The mother was at work when the child stopped breathing. De La Torre testified the injuries occurred when he tripped and fell while carrying her. The killer shot the child’s mother and another child in their home. a crisis team was sent to the school both daughters attended. Police traced gunfire to a large caliber semi automatic handgun. In Wichita a separate report cites an ex boyfriend’s early morning shooting inside a home that killed a 6 year old girl and wounded three others before he killed himself. The wounded include two women and a 9 year old girl in very serious condition.
Vernon Spike Coleman, a 67 year old man who fled Wichita in 1995, was arrested in Pasco County Florida and sent back to Sedgwick County. He faces charges including aggravated indecent liberties aggravated criminal sodomy and sexual exploitation of a child with ties to the Baby Dolls Club. Coleman had been on the county’s most wanted list.
