Ayatollah Sistani Urges Nonviolence Amid Najaf Crisis
Respected ayatollah seeks to channel his massive Shiite support into a march on Najaf to halt fighting. Thousands travel from Basra and towns en route to Najaf, while police block entry to the holy city. In Najaf and nearby Kufa the conflict has killed many civilians and disrupted the region. U.S. casualties rise as a mortar attack in Baghdad claims a soldier’s life. Al-Sistani calls for weapon-free Najaf and Kufa, withdrawal of foreign forces, and government compensation for the harmed.
