The New York stock market dropped sharply as fears of higher interest rates spread. The Dow fell 11.89 to 908.68 at midday, with losers outweighing gainers about nine to one on the NYSE, bonds and oil heavily down, and overall volume rising to 20.11 million shares.
Preliminary fall enrollment at the University of Kansas and Kansas State University rose. KU total on first day reached 24,526 with KU Lawrence at 22,224 and KU Medical Center at 2,302, while K-State registered 16,244. Final counts will be set on the 20th day.
Frankin County Kansas District Court hears petition by Dorothy Evans, mother, seeking rights of majority for minor Zina Louise Evans. A Kansas National Guard CH-54 helicopter crash near Lake Pomona on August 13 killed two and injured two. Maj. Gen. Ralph Tice said two separate advisory teams from Fort Rucker Fort Riley and the National Guard Bureau are examining the cause. A second Kansas Army National Guard aviation team is also investigating and findings will be compared. Complete results may take months as engine disassembly and inspection are required.
About 500 grieving relatives of 110 victims confronted aviation officials at the funeral home in Taiwan. They criticized Far Eastern Air Transport for taking off after mechanical problems and for poor notification and handling of bodies. 104 passengers and six crew members died when the Boeing 737 crashed near Kaohsiung, with US, Canadian, and Japanese victims among the dead. Investigators found no evidence of chemical explosives. the plane apparently disintegrated in mid-air.
Dense fog shrouded northeast Kansas early today with near zero visibility in spots. The National Weather Service forecasts scattered thundershowers today and Tuesday, with highs in the mid 80s to low 90s and tonight’s low in the 60s. winds from the south-southeast.
Futures prices for corn and soybeans fell to new contract lows as hedge selling from country markets added pressure amid high interest rates and strong crop conditions. Wheat and oats also declined while soybean gains looked unlikely, and the day saw mixed livestock futures with pork bellies uncertain after a government meat storage report.
