Mansfield seeks probe into Potsdam papers leak
Senator Mike Mansfield urged the Senate Foreign Relations Committee to investigate whether the Potsdam papers were leaked for political purposes. He cited reports claiming Truman and Stalin discussed stalling a Japanese peace feeler before Hiroshima and noted claims of a leak by reporters Knebel and Bailey. State Dept and papers deny intentional leakage and say access was part of building a book, with rules changed to prevent repetition. Privately, Herter had directed withholding until after the elections.
