Field Day to mark end of Gruver tenure at East-Central Kansas Field
Field Day on August 31 will also mark the end of Clifford Gruver’s term as field superintendent. He has resigned and will stay two weeks as adviser to incoming superintendent Charlie Knight. Gruver plans to farm near Scott City, irrigating corn and alfalfa, and starting a 200 acre dryland wheat and sorghum operation while experimenting with soybeans. He aims to move to Western Kansas in mid September and will attend the Franklin County Farm Bureau meeting in October where he serves as president.

Phase feeding of protein cuts farmers protein costs
Iowa State and Kansas State University researchers report phased protein feeding can trim up to 25 percent of protein costs as cattle move through growth stages. Phase one favors vegetable protein, phase two allows urea, phase three uses more urea, and phase four relies on grain for protein. Also warns silo gas risks during silage making with possible delayed lung injury.
