Cloudy sky overhead as the Franklin County eclipse draws observers including Eldon Crenshaw and his wife Sherrei in the Ottawa parking lot across from the library. Ottawa University freshmen Jaime Tonasket and Crystal Williams snap selfies, raising funds for a charity.
Hutchinson Cosmosphere hosts about several hundred observers for the first total solar eclipse across America in nearly a century. Visitors from Lindsborg join locals, with tinted glasses, binoculars, and a telescope in the south parking lot. Staff note 93 percent visibility outside the path of totality, and Venus appears as a bright dot. The event feels festive with food trucks and crafts, while education partners provide demonstrations and material information. Another eclipse will cross western Kansas August 12, 2045.
