Johnson juveniles face first adult trials in state
Johnson County prosecutors become the first in Kansas to launch adult trials for 14 and 15 year olds accused of violent crimes under a July law. Case details include Kapelle Simpson, 15, ordered to stand trial on two counts of aggravated robbery after a July 28 holdup. Other counties plan similar steps as Sedgwick and Wyandotte pursue youths in murder, kidnapping, and rape cases. When youths turn 18, judges may extend confinement in adult facilities if needed.

An Iraqi tanker reaches Aden after warning shots, Yemen adheres to sanctions, and Gulf defense ministers discuss a united shield with up to 10,000 troops. Baghdad hints at talks, but U.S. dismisses offers until Iraq withdraws forces. With 3,000 Americans trapped, 54 held in Iraq, and 21 Britons known detained, the crisis deepens.
