The Swiss National Bank refused to contribute to a 1.25 billion settlement by United Bank of Switzerland and Credit Suisse to compensate Holocaust victims and heirs. It said participation would lend an official tone and fall outside national interest, while noting past wartime actions were settled in a 1946 treaty. The banks urged broader private funding despite government and bank opposition.
