How To Grow Holiday Blooms
Earl Aronson outlines a step by step method to force tulips and hyacinths for Christmas gifts. Begin in early September with 13 weeks of cool rooting at 35 to 48 degrees, then 3 to 5 weeks in a warmer bright room before bloom. Use a 6 inch pot with a drainage hole and a soil mix of one third potting soil one third peat moss and one third vermiculite or sand. Bulbs sit just at the rim and are not pressed into soil. After cooling, move to a warm 60 to 65 degree room in sun and water as needed. If buds lag or bloom too fast adjust by cooling or warming locations.
