Early Wynn rides a rare stretch of success as Chicago closes in on New York, while Washington’s win over the Yankees tightens the AL race. The Senators beat Frank B. Terry and the Yankees 4 2, with Camilo Pascual pitching five hits and Bob Allison delivering a two run eighth inning. Detroit and Baltimore also played, but fog idle the Boston game.
Ottawa High School Cyclones begin 1960 football with equipment check on Tuesday Aug 23. Sophomores juniors and seniors pick up gear at 9 a.m. Seventh eighth and ninth grade students will collect in the afternoon. Physical exams set for 1 p.m. Wednesday. Practice starts Aug 29.
The Wichita Bobcats defeated West Quincy Mo 40 Friday night to open the 1969 National Non pro Baseball Tournament. Omaha beat Anniston Ala 12-2 in the other opener as West Quincy faces the Albuquerque Ponchatoula Loser Sunday morning and Wichita meets Omaha in a second round Sunday night. Dave Newkirk pitched four hits and a five run fifth inning powered the Bobcats to the win.
Lionel Hebert and Billy Casper share the halfway lead at 133 in the St. Paul Open. Hebert carded a 69 after a 64 opening, missing a four-foot putt on the 16th. Casper fired a 67 after a 66 first round, including an 80 yard wedge eagle on the 11th. One stroke back at 134 are Joe Campbell and Don Fairfield.
Mickey Wright of Bonita California shot 69 on rain soaked Beaver Lake course to take a two stroke lead in the 54 hole Asheville Women's Open. Huth Jessen and Betsy Rawls tied for second at 71 while Wiffi Smith Louise Suggs Jo Ann Prentice and Kathy Cornelius were at par 72.
In the MIKED COUPLES LEAGUE matchups, Dodd posted a high 1930 with C Dodd 204 and 353, while Cordie achieved 216 in the 1030 series. Legernt led with 189 in the 518 set. multiple pairs like Jackson and Christie posted notable totals, reflecting a high scoring bowling session.
The City Commission granted the Santa Fe Railroad permission to run trains through Emporia at 30 miles per hour, up from 20. The railroad had sought a limit of 40 miles per hour.

A two day grass roots gathering in Des Moines launches a farm vote drive for November. Kennedy and Johnson will attend and speak as Sen. Humphrey Symington Kefauver Burdick and others join farmers and farm groups from multiple states to shape policy. The effort aims to craft the canoe of ticket through farmer input.
Washington AP agricultural officials report 126,902,207 bushels of the 1960 wheat crop placed under price support loans and purchase agreements through July, compared with 107,720,889 bushels for the 1959 crop in the same period. Most of 1960 support was in Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas with Kansas at 50,572,195 bushels, Oklahoma 40,763,322, and Texas 23,630,258.
