Kansas State University researcher Duane Davis reports embryo transfer as a practical repopulation method for pseudorabies infected purebred swine herds. The approach, demonstrated Oct 2–3, 1981, in Iowa with Duroc breeders, was presented at the 1982 joint animal science meeting. Embryos were recovered from 38 Duroc sows and 805 embryos shipped to recipients, yielding 208 piglets with 189 survivors and an average litter of 9.45. Costs per pig were about 120–140 dollars, versus 180–200 for cesarean. Benefits include repeated embryo collection, reduced rearing needs, and preservation of elite genetics, though requires clean recipient herds and careful titer testing.
