Landowners balk at city paving plan near Industrial Avenue

Ottawa business leaders from Fashion Inc, Duke Manufacturing, National Sign, Rome Manufacturing oppose a proposed benefit district to fund paving of Industrial Avenue. They cite high costs under 6 and 10 inch base options totaling about 121,469 with at least one owner facing no clear return on investment. City considers three paths: negotiate, proceed with petition, or drop the plan.

Heights student earns US Achievement Academy honors

Central Heights High School student David Hanson has been named a U S Achievement Academy award winner in science and an academy All American Scholar. Nominated by CH instructors Jim Hartman and Melody Wendt, Hanson is the son of Larry and Debbie Hanson. Grandparents are Gail and Betty Vosburg.

Iola Teen Dies After Sniffing Butane Gas

A 16-year-old Iola boy, Todd Westerman, died after allegedly sniffing butane lighter gas. He was pronounced dead at 11:20 p.m. Sunday following unconsciousness while two companions reported illness and breathing trouble.

City Commission Debates Tax Break and Sewer Easement

Ottawa commission will vote on a 50 percent property tax abatement for MacFasteners Inc and a sanitary sewer easement extending lines into the new industrial park. The five year abatement runs 1992 to 1996 in exchange for a 250 dollar plus 50 percent in lieu tax. Also on the agenda: raising planning firm Bucher Willis and Ratliff fees from 8000 to 12500 and a beer license for Heartland Lanes after ownership change.
