Jordan Shooting Suspect Found Innocent in Civil Rights Case
Federal prosecutors say the sniper shooting of black civil rights leader Ver non E. Jordan Jr. is closed after Joseph Paul Franklin's acquittal by an all white jury. Franklin smiled as the verdict was read after eight hours of deliberations. He faces four life terms for other racially motivated killings and is linked to shootings in Salt Lake City Oklahoma City and Indianapolis. The government says the case is finished and will not be reopened. Judges and officials noted the unanimous verdict and emphasized the difficulty of proving racially motivated crime under the charged statute. Jordan, then head of the National Urban League, was wounded outside a motel in Fort Wayne in 1980.
