Senate Race Unsettled in Three Kansas Counties
Canvassing to resolve a three county tie for the Republican state Senate nomination continued in Shawnee Douglas and Jefferson counties. Incumbent Sen. Donald S. Hults and challenger Reynolds Shultz, both of Lawrence, each had 4 440 votes after precinct canvassing. Jefferson and Douglas counts were unchanged at the secretary of state’s office, while Shawnee remains unresolved. The State Board of Canvassers met but recessed to await further canvassing with a possible Wednesday reconvening. If ties persist, casting lots would decide the outcome. A fee count request would go to the attorney general for decision.
