Lane residents report about 20 old cars stacked along the southern bank of Potawatomi Creek at Dutch Henry's Crossing. The rusted vehicles, some piled atop others, date from early to mid 20th century and were placed to curb erosion by the railroad. The ford’s history links to Shermanville founder Henry Sherman and to John Brown’s pre Civil War era activity near the crossing.
The Pottawatomie Rifle Company led by Brown's son moved toward Lawrence to aid the Free State cause after the May 21 1856 sacking. Townsley notes the action ended as they turned near Palmyra. Lane residents report rusty cars wedged along Potawatomi Creek bank east of Kansas Avenue bridge north of Lane, held by cables to curb erosion.
In a historical account, scholars dispute whether radical abolitionist John Brown led the Pottawatomie Massacre band. Affidavits from James Doyle’s family describe brutal executions and identify an eight man party, with Brown possibly directing orders from a northern army.
After the Doyle killings Brown's group moved along Mosquito Creek to Shermanville postmaster Allen Wilkinson's cabin. Wilkinson, a Kansas Territorial Legislature member, was dragged from his cabin and killed in the road by a Brown son. His body lay by the roadside as the company sought Dutch Henry's Crossing.
Herald archives recall a July 6 1963 Garnett riot where 2000 residents clashed with police and firefighters as tear gas filled streets and small explosives hurled. Ottawa Police Captain Robert Cowdin 43 died from a heart attack caused by tear gas exposure amid the turmoil unrelated to the Ferguson unrest.
U S Senator Pat Roberts told Ottawa residents he seeks a fourth term, noting voters repeatedly reelect him while defending his record on immigration and national issues. He faces Democrat Chad Taylor and independent Greg Orman in November after defeating Milton Wolf in the GOP primary. He argued his job is to convey Kansas values to D C and not the reverse.
