Mildred Martha Archer 97 of Ottawa died Saturday August 14 2004 at home. A memorial service was held at First Baptist Church Ottawa. She was born March 9 1907 in Zion City Illinois and taught school starting 1927 in Pratt. She married Paul Archer January 6 1934. Wildfire menaces French Gulch as 1000 plus fighters battle flames

A wind driven wildfire roared through the Northern California mining town of French Gulch threatening 150 homes and 10 commercial buildings. More than 7,700 acres burned by Sunday night as about 1,000 firefighters including 400 state prison inmates worked to save a church post office hotel and school. Two commercial structures were lost and 300 residents evacuated with containment not expected until Friday.
