Kansas man proving he's an artist not a rural eccentric

Associated Press reports crop artist Stan Herd, who uses a plow as a brush, turns fields into portraits and ads viewed from the air. Since 1981 he has created 160-acre Satanta and Will Rogers murals, a one-acre Amelia Earhart image, a 30-acre still life in Kansas and even projects in New York, London, and Australia. This year he designed the Turtle Island Corn Maze near Lawrence on five acres, cutting a 400-by-600 foot turtle shape with 10-foot corn and three-foot paths, drawing visitors who paid up to seven dollars each. Herd, based near Protection, Kan, led a month-long crew to map and carve the maze with helpers and machetes.

Kansas imposes hands-off rule on ready-to-eat foods

Kansas adds rules for food handlers banning bare hands on prepared and ready to eat items, affecting about 13 000 eateries including supermarkets with takeout. Changes also lower refrigerator temperatures to 41 degrees and require date marking of high risk foods, amid state task force compromises and CDC illness estimates.
