Strip Search Suit Filed Against Independence PD
A 64-year-old Independence woman filed a $1 million lawsuit alleging unconstitutional strip searches by Independence Police Department officers after a 1976 traffic stop. The suit joins the department, Police Chief Lawrence L. Cook, and city employees as defendants, amid multiple related suits totaling $8.8 million. The plaintiff says the intrusive searches occurred while she was arrested for a 1976 traffic violation and fined for license issues, causing emotional and physical distress.

Klan Leader Silenced as Police Arrest Marchers at Montgomery
Bill Wilkinson and 186 adults along with 12 juveniles were arrested for parade law violations during a Klansmen march in Alabama. Wilkinson, Denham Springs, said the protest aimed to march to the Capitol to erase the 1965 white race shame, while authorities released adults on bonds and held youths for a hearing. The route echoed the 1965 Selma march led by Martin Luther King Jr., ending peacefully near Montgomery with supporters gathered at a field campsite.
