Jury Selections in Kansas County to Comply With New Law
Judge Floyd H. Coffman of Franklin County District Court said the county will follow the Kansas Legislature’s changes to jury selection when January jurors are drawn. The law shifts selection from mayors to district judges in small counties, bans exemptions by status, and uses voter and enumeration lists to form juries. Coffman notes most exemptions are repealed, eligibility requires Kansas citizenship and county residence, and 18 year olds may be eligible if they meet the elector criteria. He forecasts minimal extra cost and expects juries to remain representative with potential inclusion of lower income individuals.
