Stem cell funding decision buys time for policy and research
President Bush allowed limited federal funding for stem cell research, easing immediate political pressure while scientists begin cataloging existing cell lines and planning grant applications. NIH officials estimate around 60 lines exist globally and tens to hundreds of millions may be spent yearly as work translates toward potential cures.

Researchers call Bush plan cruel compromise
Researchers in science and health policy criticize President Bushs plan to fund embryonic stem cell research only from existing lines as a cruel compromise that could create two classes of patients and limit universal treatments. They question the claimed 60 usable lines and warn that many more lines may be needed for full therapeutic benefit.

Bush stem cell policy draws mixed reactions across spectrum
President Bush proposed a middle ground on embryonic stem cell research drawing praise from moderate supporters like Sen. Bill Frist and Senate Majority Leader Tom Daschle while hard liners condemn the plan as morally unacceptable. Conservative groups including Bishop Fiorenza and Tom DeLay opposed expanding research on destroyed embryos though some groups welcomed using already dead embryos if no new killings occur.

Fungi and plants may have colonized land earlier than thought
Pennsylvania State University researchers estimate fungi appeared on land about 1.3 billion years ago, followed by land plants 700 million years ago. Using gene mutation rates, they suggest these organisms lowered atmospheric CO2 and raised O2, cooling Earth and enabling animal evolution. The Science report links these changes to snowball Earth episodes and the Cambrian explosion.

NOAA Raises Forecast for More Tropical Storms This Season
NOAA forecasters predict up to a dozen tropical storms and as many as eight hurricanes as Atlantic conditions favor storm development. Peak season is August through September with the official end on November 30. Forecaster Gerry Bell notes increased risk to the U S and Caribbean as systems move westward. Colorado State University’s William Gray also boosted his outlook to as many as 12 storms and seven hurricanes. So far there have been two.
