Telephone Strike Averted In Most Areas By POLLY ANDERSON
Forty thousand telephone workers remained on strike in parts of the country while tentative settlements and talks continued in many regions. In Western states 30,000 Communications Workers of America members reached settlements after midnight Saturday, with negotiations ongoing for the Nynex and Ameritech subsidiaries. Most New York area strikers were with Nynex, and an IBEW union represented many Nynex workers outside New York. About 900 CWA members at Ameritech’s publishing unit in Ohio Michigan and Indiana walked out Sunday but main Ameritech subsidiaries faced no stoppage. US West strikes ended nationwide Sunday. Customers faced possible delays amid a highly automated system with operators, installers, and maintenance staff affected. Baby Bells were formed after AT&T breakup in 1984.
