Markets slide as Fed acts to calm credit fears
Wall Street opened lower as credit conditions remained tight despite the Fed's liquidity measures and a pledge to support orderly markets. The Dow fell 82.92 to 18,187.76 while the S&P 500 slipped 10.58 and the Nasdaq dropped 24.30 amid continuing fears of restricted credit. The Fed arranged a three day repo and said it would accept 19 billion dollars in mortgage backed securities as rate pressures lingered above 6 percent.
