Osawatomie 15 year old state title all star baseball team finished third at the Midwest Plains Regional in Booneville Missouri after dropping a 6-0 opener to Booneville and advancing through the losers bracket with wins over Rapid City Denver and Creighton Prep before falling 8-5 to Shoreview Minnesota in the semifinals. Coach Buddy Welch led five Central Heights High School players on the squad.
Pittsburg State, 12-1-1 last season and runner up in the NCAA Division II championship, was named the favorite by Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association coaches to win the league again. Alex Wendler leads the Gorillas as junior running back, with eight seniors returning, while Washburn’s Michael Dritlein and Pittsburg State’s Jenny Pracht earned the Ken B. Jones Award as top student athletes.
LAWRENCE The Sunflower State Games broke its total entries record for the sixth straight year with 7594 participants, up 1000 from last year. Since starting in 1990 with 2400 entries, the event drew all 105 counties represented for the first time. Executive director Brett McCabe praised statewide Olympic style competition and growth prospects.
