Addicts Face Lengthy Wait
NEW YORK AP Hundreds of recovering addicts joined Cardinal John O Connor in sending a message of hope to drug users but state officials report four month waits to enter rehabilitation centers. Residential centers funded by the state have had waiting lists for 18 months. Center leaders describe demand as soaring with 3 800 patients, 110 percent of capacity, and some urging outpatient care while others remain on the streets amid rising crime. The vigil at St Patrick's Cathedral included public officials and recovering addicts as the toll of crack and other drugs is highlighted. Odyssey House halted admissions for the first time in 20 years as crack use spikes among young adults and even youths as young as ten are treated. NBC and CBS announce prime time drug documentaries.
