Fires Burn Forty Buildings in Sierra Nevada Foothills
Fires driven by gusty winds burned across 1,200 acres in the Sierra Nevada foothills destroying at least 12 houses and other structures. North of Rough and Ready a second blaze wiped out six houses, 12 outbuildings, 10 cars and the Rough and Ready school. A third fire in Lakeport destroyed two houses in a wooded subdivision. In the mountains near the state line a forest fire was 90 percent contained after burning 7,300 acres and three houses.

Farmer dies after ATV overturns on Kansas farm
A 72-year-old farmer identified as Lawrence Leonard was killed near Junction City when his all-terrain vehicle struck a tree root and overturned pinning him beneath. The Geary County Sheriff’s Department said the accident occurred Saturday night as he was rounding up cattle.
