Firestone refutes recall claim on 500 tire safety

Firestone Tire & Rubber Co says its steel belted radial 500 tire is safe and that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration failed to identify a defect when urging a recall. Attorney Patrick F. McCartan argues the agency relied on unrelated incidents and complaints and lacks a comparative scientific evaluation of the tire. Firestone cites 660 billion miles of service and tests prescribed by NHTSA to show reliability and asks for reasonable action to reassure the public while aiding the agency's inquiry.
