Time Was Against Rocky From Start
Gov. Nelson Rockefeller's bid for the Republican presidential nomination failed due to late entry. Analysts say a March 1 hesitation harmed his standing, allowing Nixon to gain momentum while Rockefeller poured millions into ads and a nationwide campaign. The delay cost him support and time to build a cohesive race plan.

Reagan Satisfied With His Strategy
Gov Ronald Reagan said there was nothing he could have done differently after losing the Republican nomination on the first ballot. He defended his late entry into the race, urged unity, and asked convention delegates to unite for defeating the Democrats in November. His advisers reportedly urged an earlier run, but Reagan chose to stay a favored son until his name was placed in nomination.
