Dr. Luis A. Alvarez of Leawood received three years in a minimum security prison and a $30,000 fine after 46 counts of Medicare Medicaid and mail fraud. Co-defendants Paul Wilde and Diane Wille faced three months and three years probation respectively with fines for aiding the fraud. The scheme involved false bills to the federal government for services not rendered between 1977 and 1978 at Alvarez’s clinics in Overland Park and Kansas City Kan.
Mark Joseph Yavorsky a 34 year old UC San Diego drama student and half brother of Kansas City Royals catcher John Wathan was found innocent by reason of insanity in the fatal stabbing of his 64 year old mother Mary Wathan. He admitted stabbing her with a three foot saber during coffee with a neighbor last June and told psychiatrists it was to avert a nuclear holocaust. A court set an August hearing to decide if he should receive outpatient treatment or be committed to a state facility.

A Kansas City couple escaped injury when a bathroom explosion occurred from Clinitest reagent tablets used for diabetes testing.
