Lap-Bar Amusement Rides Deadly Thrill at Peony Park
A 13-year-old boy died at Peony Park in Omaha when a Skydiver ride door opened. the lap bar attached to the front hatch drew safety scrutiny from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, which previously warned about the Zipper ride. The incident follows prior failures of pin locks and ride maintenance. The Chance Manufacturing Co. defends the design, while local operator reports a missing cotter pin and a stopped ride as crews investigated. A separate Kansas decision frees 270 Gas Service customers by Aug 1 after a moratorium lift, with service areas spanning from Minneola to Paola.

Tax Bill Faces Carter Muscle
President Carter pushes a tax cut overhaul to favor lower and middle income taxpayers. A Corman Fisher amendment would raise the family tax cut to 260 dollars for a 10 000 dollar income and lift the overall cut to 18.1 billion dollars while keeping or adjusting credits and exemptions. The plan also reshapes capital gains taxes with a 17.5 percent top rate for gains above 800 thousand dollars and a 10 percent levy on the untaxed portion.
