Big Fund For Kansas Work
President Eisenhower signed a large appropriation for military construction. Kansas will receive 31.184 million dollars for Army and Air Force projects including Ft Scavenworth, Ft Riley, Hutchinson NAS, McConnell AFB Wichita, Forbes AFB Topeka, and Smoky Hill AFB Salina. The total national appropriation reaches 1.895 billion with funds partly from transfers.

Surgeon General Leonard A. Scheele said several laboratories are working on a milder yet effective antipolio vaccine. He noted the Salk vaccine used in tests and more widely this year uses the Mahoney Type 1 strain, which is highly antigenic but highly invasive. A less invasive strain offering adequate antibodies would add safety.
