Historians gain new evidence that baseball existed earlier than the 1839 Doubleday tale. A Spectator and the New York Gazette reported games of base ball in Manhattan at Broadway and 8th Street, suggesting an organized form and a possibly evolving pastime that scholars previously wrestled with.
