Why apricots rarely appear in fresh markets

The USDA explains apricots are a specialty crop requiring precise climate conditions. Frosts, insufficient winter chill, heat sensitivity, and a short picking season limit production to few states and windowed harvests. Peak shipments occur in June and July, with August showing only some fruit. Total 1976 crop about 180,000 tons, up from 169,500 in 1975.
