Jeff Farrell, 23, recovering from an emergency appendectomy, won the 100 meters freestyle heat in 55.9 seconds and then the semifinal, placing him in contention for the Olympic team at Brennan Pools. The Kansan later faced a possible spot in the 200 meter freestyle as the four day trials continued. Sam Hall and Gary Tobian won diving events as the trials showcased USA swimming depth.

Gutowski had set a world record 15 feet 8 inches in 1957 and his mark was surpassed last month by Don Bragg at Palo Alto. Gutowski had struggled with leg injuries this season and did not make the Olympic team.
