Franklin County Extension office urged commissioners to lessen next year's budget cut. Youths and 4-H members pressed to preserve programs as the panel weighed options to fund services. The council rejected moving to the courthouse or Crestview facilities and debated CHIP cuts, asking not to publish the proposed extension budget.
A Kansas GOP poll shows Phill Kline and David Adkins neck and neck for the party nomination with 38 percent undecided. Kline leads 30 percent to 26 percent, but plus or minus four points ties the race. Both campaigns press ahead with extensive statewide campaigning.
Franklin County farmers heard about a statewide methamphetamine epidemic at a Farm Bureau meeting. Scott Teeselink, Kansas Farm Bureau crime prevention specialist, cited four labs seized in 1994 and 846 last year, with 10 in Franklin and six in Anderson counties. He explained warning flags of meth manufacture and noted its street names crank ice crystal chalk and glass.
Donald C. Hay, a 41 year banker and longtime civic participant, runs in District Four on the Republican ticket. He opposes wives Attebery and Farrr, cites farmland and road issues, calls for open government, and seeks to limit a county administrator, reduce the tax flow, and rethink the annex sale.
