Ottawa Board of Education advances demolition plans for the 80 year old Ottawa Middle School listed on state and national historic registers. The Kansas State Historical Society has warned the project would encroach threaten the Ottawa Carnegie Library, prompting a legal and procedural impasse with potential court action.
Laura Potter reports a woman, Joan Rundle, remained locked inside her car for 30 to 35 minutes after a failure left all systems dead. A neighbor girl Courtney alerted authorities and retrieved another set of keys from the owner, freeing Rundle as police arrived. The car was towed to a Buick dealership and the cause remains unknown.
AP report says the Menninger Clinic will stay in Topeka at least until summer 2002 after failing to reach an affiliation deal with Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and the Methodist Health Care system. CEO Dr. Walt Menninger cited the need for a medical school tie and said negotiations were amicable. Gov. Graves offered to reopen discussions to keep Menninger in Kansas.
Lane Fair opens Thursday with a parade greased pig contest and a chance to win a colt. The event, over 100 years old, features 4-H entries, judging, a kids pedal tractor pull, and nightly entertainment including Arnie Johnsons, Midnight Special and Crown Canyon. Grand marshals Joe and Katy Alexander lead a Friday parade, with free prize drawings each evening and a quilt show at the Osa Lane Quilt Guild.
