President hopeful Bob Dole broadened his vice presidential search by asking Arizona Senator John McCain to complete a questionnaire and undergo a background check. McCain, the ninth candidate invited so far, plans to help elect Dole while declining to inordinate praise. Also contacted recently were Senators Connie Mack and Don Nickles.
Kansas reports a record 1,352,173 registered voters for Tuesday's primary, with 594,919 Republicans, 392,011 Democrats, 9,869 Libertarians, and 109 Reform Party members. Unaffiliated voters total 355,265, able to request a Republican or Democratic ballot, while Libertarians and Reformists cannot vote in the primary.
A military court cleared former SS Capt. Erich Priebke of cruelty and premeditation for the 335 Italian civilians killed in 1944 reprisal killings. He was found guilty of taking part but not of the harsher charges, saying he followed orders. Prosecutors plan to appeal.
Leslie Reinier, a candidate in Franklin County’s second district, faces questions over a petition filed May 27 1996 that exceeded the 180 day rule from first to final signature, potentially affecting Tuesday’s primary. County clerk Donna Mietchen noted no remedy. Fellow candidate Tom Weigand also failed to file a required statement of substantial interest after his February appointment, risking a misdemeanor.
President Clinton announced he will sign a GOP framed welfare overhaul after liberal protests and changes he calls too harsh. He cited time limits of five years per family and work requirements within two years, while promising stronger protections for children than earlier versions.
Pomona resident Bill Rhodes reported an African tiger escaped from a cage near Pomona High School on Kansas Highway 68. The animal, weighing 250 to 400 pounds and nearly two years old, wandered across the road then returned to its cage before authorities arrived. Rhodes planned a larger enclosure to prevent future escapes and recalled past insurance barriers to a walk-through zoo idea.
Sears proceeds with its new 8000 square foot store at 223 S Main despite weather delays. Owner Donn Higgins confirms a September 1 opening focused on appliances, home electronics, and home and garden products with no clothing lines. Local contractors include Longhorn Construction and Electrical Enterprises Inc. No downtime between moves from 106 S Main to the new site, where Positive Impressions will relocate.
