Voters flocked to Ottawa polls this morning with more than 600 casting ballots as heavy rain dampened turnout. City Budget On The Rise In Ottawa For 1979

City Manager Robert Mills announced a 1979 city budget totaling 7,204,189 with a mill levy of 40.53 a rise from last year’s 6,208,997 and 38.10. The increase funds a 7 percent cost of living raise for employees and adds 2 mills for public safety equipment while bond and interest payments drop 1.69 mills saving 40,000 annually. A half-cent sales tax could add 229,000 in anticipated revenue for the general fund, earmarked for street improvements if approved. The plan also includes a 1.26 mill rise to support employee benefits and excludes capital-improvement budgeting. An Ottawa City Commission meeting agenda includes zoning action between Willow Olive and 14th 15th Streets.
