Oklahoma Reapportionment Ordered by Federal Court
Oklahoma Gov. Henry Bellman says no delay in calling special primary elections to align with a federal court order. A three-judge panel voided the state's primaries and ordered a population based reapportionment, creating a 48 member Senate and 99 member House, following Supreme Court equal population rulings. The action marks a defeat for rural legislators who dominated the legislature for decades, and the Justice Department notes it as a first in which a federal court overruled state legislative elections.
