Kansan's Idea Saves Taxpayers Millions
Air Force Major James W. Hickman, a Wichita State grad, sketched a single multipurpose nuclear weapons rotary launcher that could carry all B 1B missiles, saving $42.4 million in the first production year. He won $5,000 locally and the concept moves up for larger national awards, with Rockwell building the launcher in Tulsa and six B 1B bombers slated for McConnell AFB in 1986 87. Hickman, 44, based at McConnell, has also saved about $60 million with a cruiser missile pylon device and plans to retire in January 1996 after a career spanning C 124 service, Cessna work, and engineering degrees.
