Forecast calls for sunny today with highs around 70. Tonight will be partly cloudy with lows near 50. Sunday turns warm and cloudy with a 30 percent chance of storms and highs in the mid 70s. Sunday night also carries a 30 percent storm chance with lows around 55. Weather details appear on Page 12.
Angela Chance, reeling from a previous electrical fire, again faces homelessness as a Friday house fire destroys her stepmother Betty Brumett’s home at 708 N Mulberry in Ottawa. Brumett and Chance’s five children escaped with help from neighbors. Heather Tucker’s family also affected. Fire under investigation, Red Cross not yet arranged, and no relief plan announced by Friday.
A house near Massasoit and North Mulberry streets caught fire Friday morning. Angela Chance, shown center right being comforted by friends, walked toward ambulances as Ottawa Fire Chief Jeff Carner assessed the scene. No injuries were reported in the blaze, marking a second major setback for the mother of three in the past year.
Herald staff reports a Friday afternoon crash on I-35 near Wellsville injured at least two people and backed up traffic for hours. Mark Lauver 33 Pomona was flown to KU Medical Center after attempting a right shoulder pass in a construction zone. His car crossed into the southbound lane colliding with Randall Strickling 44 Wellsville whose pickup was hit by Terry Croney 39 Kansas City Kansas. Strickling reported possible injuries.
In Garnett Kansas residents voiced concern as SRS announced plans to close 65 of its 106 offices in two years including the Anderson County site. Keri Rusk told officials her family spent savings on medical care and asked how clients would locate help after closures.
