Missing NASA artifacts raise questions in Cosmosphere case
Federal investigators report that more than half of 26 NASA loan items listed missing in the Cosmosphere audit have been located while total missing artifacts may exceed 100. Indicted former Cosmosphere president Max Ary faces charges of removing Cosmosphere owned items and selling them at out of state auctions. Authorities won’t disclose recovery counts or locations. Cosmosphere CEO Jeff Ollenburger says no items have been returned and the museum expects recovered pieces will come back. Some recovered pieces are on loan at Omniplex in Oklahoma City and Cradle of Aviation in Long Island. three items remain on display at Omniplex under 2004 loan agreements. Additional items were traded with collectors or loaned to private parties, and three NASA artifacts tied to the Apollo 13 film were not returned.
