Local diabetes chapter earns outstanding chapter award
The Franklin County American Diabetes Association chapter received an outstanding chapter award at the Kansas affiliate meeting in Wichita for 1993 94 activities including patient education programs. Mary Jane and Gilbert F Martin accepted the award on behalf of the Ottawa chapter. Keith Shumway is the local chapter president.

Searchers near collapse as debris foul air slows rescue
After a night of 120 firefighters entering the ruins of a day care and Social Security office area, another shoring up halted work. A 20‑foot slab was bolted to the eighth floor to prevent collapse while a strong odor lingered, and no survivors were found.
