Ewe Test Fluctuations in Fatting and Lamba Yields at K State
Ewes fed a low-energy ration during 1962 preflushing at Kansas State University Dalby station lost weight and lambed earlier, while the normal ration yielded a 3.4 percent higher lamb crop. In 1961 the low-energy group produced a 3 percent larger lamb crop. The two-ration trial used two pounds alfalfa per ewe daily or a standard mix with sorghum, showing a 11.6 lb loss vs 0.2 lb gain during flushing but a 14.6 lb to 5 lb gain advantage for low-energy ewes in the following 41 days. Predictions for 1962-63 include keg prices under 1962 levels into spring, with pork production rising and beef competition depressing prices. Soybean inoculation is urged to ensure nitrogen fixation for 35 bushel yields, with fresh inoculant and clear application instructions on the package.
