More than 500 Kansas businesses hold licenses to handle low level radioactive materials and dispose of waste. KDHE notes licenses rose from 450 in 1979 to 525 in 1986 despite consolidating multiple licenses per institution. Waste is managed by six methods including transfer, decay storage, return to supplier, sewer, incineration, and land burial.
