Elims occur in boys and girls events with events including sprints relays jumps and throws. Events are divided into lightweight middleweight and heavyweight classes by weight for both genders.

Milwaukee manager Charlie Dressen plans steady work for Carl Willey, a slender right-hander with a blazing fastball. Hayden Riley named new basketball coach at Alabama after Eugene Lambert resigns to lead Memphis State. Riley, an Alabama assistant since 1958, replaces Lambert who ends 18 years of coaching with a 263 167 overall record and a 49 49 mark at Alabama.
Walnut Calif AP Two time Olympic Champion Parry OBrien and Dallas Long head a field at Mt San Antonio Relays aiming for Rome gold. OBrien seeks a third Olympic title while Long, 19, a Southern California sophomore, and Bill Nieder, with a 65 foot 7 inch put, contest the shot put, meeting outdoors this season for the first time.
O'Brien plans to compete at the Kansas Relays after a world record list shows 63-4. Long’s best reached 64-64 with Davis at 63-10. Nieder’s efforts at Lawrence will be broadcast to athletes and crowd via long distance telephone coverage as the event unfolds.
