Prose honor for Ottawa woman in Kansas Voices Contest

Gayle Norris of Ottawa earned honorable mention for her prose piece A Home In the Country in the 1995 Kansas Voices Contest. A May 6 reading of winning pieces will be held at Bluestem Booksellers in Winfield. 925 entries from 442 Kansas authors were judged.

Matthews mayor urges citizen participation in city plan updates

In a council meeting outgoing mayor urged more residents to volunteer for boards and commissions while two citizens spoke during public comments. Berniece Smith urged action on leasing the old Ottawa Recreation Commission building to the Ottawa Girls Club and funds to refurbish the Ottawa Senior Center. Adrian Derousseau pressed KDOT to terminate traffic islands at US-59 and K-68 for safety and flow. Also approved were bond issues for road and sewer projects, handicapped parking spaces, and proclamations for Volunteer Week and other recognitions.
