Pope John Paul II Leads Good Friday Cross Walk in Rome
In a torchlit Good Friday ceremony the Pope walked the 14 Stations of the Cross through Rome’s ruins, wearing mourning robes and carrying a 4 foot cross. Rain fell as thousands, including many foreign pilgrims, watched from Colosseum to Palatine Hill while a choir sung Latin chants. The pontiff later heard confessions in St. Peter’s and led a liturgical service before 15,000 visitors. He urged prayers for Christians facing persecution and praised Far East believers. He will celebrate Easter Vigil and Mass with the Urbi et Orbi blessing.

Governor vetoes three bills in Kansas water and wildlife moves
Governor John Carlin vetoed bills restricting water rights review by the chief engineer, bipartisanizing the Fish and Game Commission, and limiting state worker reclassification. He warned the first bill would curtail judicial review of water permit decisions and criticized the retroactive change as partisan. He supported limiting party dominance on the Commission but called the retroactivity a partisan ploy with two commissioners near term expirations.
