Cattle market trust hinges on honor and safeguards

Cattle theft woes tied to Thompson address dispute

Sublette area sellers report widespread losses tied to cattle delivered to 2753 Clark Road. Betsy Burris and Sam Randles filed insufficent funds claims totaling over 400 000 dollars while Steve Hammer and Jim Riffle report cattle sales and pasturing agreements collapsed. Walt Cryer alleges losses exceeding 600 000 dollars as cattle disappeared on Thompson property amid contested payments. Thompson denies Cryer and Riffle claims while admitting some missteps and acknowledging legitimate claims by Haarberg and Randles.

Sour cattle deal leaves two men rethinking futures

Jon Haarberg of Wauneta Nebraska sold cattle to Kevin Thompson of Richmond in a loss likely totaling 250000 and about 700 head. Thompson faces two counts of issuing worthless checks and awaits a Franklin County District Court appearance May 7. Both men say they have largely quit cattle trading as trust in the industry erodes amid disputes and investigations by the sheriff and FBI.
